Just Between Us

New paintings and sculpture by Alejandro Diaz-Ayala
June 4-July 2, 2011
Artist reception Saturday, June 4, 6:30 pm

Kirk Hopper Fine Arts is pleased to feature Alejandro Diaz-Ayala in his first one-man show, titled "Just Between Us." Mr. Diaz-Ayala's exhibition will run from June 4-July 2, 2011 and the artist's reception will be held on Saturday, June 4 beginning at 6:30 pm.

From Peter Paul Reubens to comic book iconography, Mr. Diaz employs an exotic melding of images that are mildly unnerving because they are juxtaposed with ease—despite the fact that they emerge from divergent centuries and sensibilities. His palette is vivid and it's not unusual to see a realistically depicted figure with what can only be termed an "exploding head" erupting with a kind of psychic ferocity. Mr. Diaz-Ayala conveys a sense of present and past, as well as American and Mexican imagery delivered with a highly deft hand, rendering compelling images on canvas that are exciting, arresting and profoundly interesting. In other words, he's crossing borders and, moreover, he does it expertly and with an obvious sense of excitement.

Mr. Hopper remarked, "I've collected Alejandro's work and that says a lot. He's an artist I believe in and I think he's an invaluable asset to those looking to build important collections. He's still young and producing voluminous amounts of work. It will be interesting to see what twists and turns lie ahead with his imagery and techniques."

Also showing Michael Christopher Matson will be showing his latest monumental sculpture, "American Beast," in the outdoor gallery.
